Transfat is considered to be the worst type of fat you can eat. Conventional banaspati is produced through a process called partial hydrogenation which is the primary source of formation of transfats. In November 2013, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) made a peliminary determination that partially hydrogenated oils are no longer Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) in human food. In a study done in Oxford, UK, a 2% increase in trans-fatty acid intake increases the risk of coronary heart diseases by approximately 25%.
Common banaspati is made from partially hydrogenated oils which may contain as high as 20% transfat. Eva VTF Banaspati is "Virtually Transfat Free" product - a term which implies a transfat content of 2% or less (generally below 1%). Eva VTF banaspati is manufactured through a unique latest European technology called interestrification instead of partial hydrogenation in which chances for formation of transfats is reduced to a minimum level.
